French International midfielder/striker who joined United from Paris St Germain for £9.5m on 1 August 2001.

Robert was born in Saint-Benoit, on the Indian Ocean Island of La Reunion, on 21 May 1975 and has won International caps at Youth, B and first team level.

He began his career at Montpellier in 1994 before moving to Paris St Germain in 1999. In 2000/01 he made 26 appearances for PSG, plus a further six as a substitute, scoring 15 goals from an attacking left sided position.

Made an impressive Magpies debut in the 1 – 1 Premiership opener at Chelsea, made Craig Bellamy’s equaliser in the next game against Sunderland before being involved in all of United’s four goals in the win at the Riverside Stadium.

Finished the season as third top United scorer in the Premiership with 8 goals and also made 16 goals for his teammates – the highest number of assists in the Premiership during 2001/02.
